The Nats dropped the first game of the Beltway Series to the Orioles 6-4 as their late rally fell short. The two teams will meet again tonight at Camden Yards in Baltimore before the series shifts back to Washington.
The Orioles used three home runs in the bottom of the first inning: solo shots by Joey Rickard and Mark Trumbo and a two-run shot by Trey Mancini to go up 4-0. They got those runs off of Nats starter Gio Gonzalez. Baltimore also added two more runs in the fourth to go up 6-0.
In the top of the fifth the Nationals finally got on the board with a double by Michael Taylor that scored Anthony Rendon. The next inning, Bryce Harper singled home Jayson Werth. In the eighth, Harper hit a home run over the centerfield wall to make it a 3-6 game. In the ninth with two on, Matt Wieters doubled into centerfield to score Daniel Murphy.
Down two runs and the tying run on base, the Nats weren’t able to string anything together since that double. Brian Goodwin grounded into a double play to end the game. First baseman Chris Davis touched the bag and then caught Adam Lind in a rundown between third base and home.
This was Wieters’ first game in Baltimore and the O’s fans gave him a standing ovation.
Thank you to all the @Orioles fans who gave Matt Wieters a warm welcome back to Baltimore.
