Trailing 3-0 to the Tigers, the Nationals rallied in the eighth inning to ultimately tie the game. That would be the final at West Palm Beach.
Part of the problem in the beginning was the Nats were unable to solve Justin Verlander. Through 4 and 2/3 innings, the Nats could only muster one hit. Verlander struck out four.
Stephen Strasburg was sharp on the afternoon as he threw 56 pitches, 40 of them in the strike zone. In four innings, he gave up two runs on three hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
The Nationals tied it in the eighth with a three run inning. Wilmer Difo got the Nats on the board with an RBI single that scored Adam Lind. Brian Goodwin followed with an RBI double to bring Difo home. Neftali Soto tied it with a sacrifice fly that drove in Goodwin.
The Nats are off today but will return to action tomorrow at 1:05 against the Astros. As each team shares the same facility, Washington will be the visitors.
