The Nats dropped the third and final game of the weekend series at Citi Field as the Mets remained one game out of the Wild Card race. The final was 5-1.
Trailing 1-0 in the second the Nationals tied it as Danny Espinosa homered into the Coca Cola corner in right field. It was his 21st of the season. The Mets regained the lead in the third with a two-run homer by Curtis Granderson. They expanded it to 5-1 when Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer of his own in the sixth.
Reynaldo Lopez took the loss allowing three runs on six hits over four innings of work. Mets rookie starting pitcher Seth Lugo had a great outing allowing one run on six hits over seven innings.
The Nationals return home today for a Labor Day game this afternoon as the Nats host the Braves. Max Scherzer (15-7, 2.89 ERA) will take the mound for the Nats while Atlanta counters with Ryan Weber (1-0, 5.24 ERA). First pitch is at 4:05.
