A sold-out Nationals Park crowd of well over 39,000 played witness to a 4-0 Nats shutout over their neighbors from Baltimore. Max Scherzer got the win, improving his record to 14-7. Mad Max went eight innings allowing two hits while striking out 10, shutting out the Birds.
Jayson Werth homered in the bottom of the fourth inning to dead center field, his 17th of the season, to give DC a 1-0 lead. In top of the fifth with one out, Scherzer fielded a groundout throw to first through his legs while backwards.
In the bottom of the eighth Trea Turner led off with a single and moved to second on a Werth single the next at-bat. Daniel Murphy drove Turner home with a double down the right field line. Bryce Harper followed with a double of his own to the other side of the field, near the left field line, to bring home Werth and Murphy. It was 4-0 Nats and that what the final tally would be. Mark Melancon made an appearance in the ninth inning.
